New Mac Mini Next Week?

As you should know my first mac was a mini over a year ago. I have since moved up to a mid range iMac, but this is still close to my heart. Here is what AppleInsider has to say. A much anticipated update to Apple's tiny Mac mini desktop computer is believed to be a lock for next week's Macworld Expo, according to some last minute reports.

TUAW is citing its own sources who say the new models will sport a revised enclosure that more closely conforms to materials used throughout the better part of Apple's product line, namely aluminum and black plastic. Legacy Mac minis have employed a mixture of grey and white plastic.

The report also corroborate some details published by AppleInsider in October regarding a move towards SATA optical drives and hard drives. It was reported that this change would be accompanied by build-to-order options that will allow customers to swap out the optical drive for a second hard drive -- a move that will cater those who intent to use the systems as mini servers.
Finish the story...

Firewire over Ethernet? Why no Firewire in Macbook?

Some people speculate the with the new firewire spec Apple can create an adapter the would retail for approx $700 USD. Wow that is insane! The real reason I think there is no firewire in the new Macbook (which i am getting next month) is that there was no room left on the logic board. Keep in mind that Apple has the bottom third of the back panel dedicated to the user removable hard drive, battery, and ram. So there was simply no room for a firewire bus. Having the Mac Mini (latest gen) I have never and will never use a firewire port. PERIOD. So do not fret, firewire is going and you will not regret it.

Mobile Safari Interface Tweaked in iPhone 2.2

So look at iPhone 2.2 firmware beta release. Looks like Apple Inc. had the time to add the Google search bar to the main url bar in Mobile Safari. Well since Apple has some free time (add copy and paste, mms, flash support, mobile podcast support, a2dp bluetooth, and etc...)

iPhones in new places (well legally)

So look at this China and Russia will be and have gotten the iPhone in their mother land. iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier," the company said. "Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation."

An unlocked 8GB model is priced at HK $5,400 (roughly US$700) and an unlocked 16GB sells for HK$ 6,200 (roughly US$800).

All retailers will begin sales of iPhone in Russia at the same time, during the night between Oct. 2 and Oct. 3

So if you have not legally brought an iPhone get your hands on one as soon as possible!

Evidence points toward iPhone 3G home activation and model refresh

Multiple sources inside Apple Retail have reported evidence pointing toward a contract free, home activation option for future iPhone 3G sales, along with the possibility of a model refresh in pricing and capacity similar to last year's.

Home activation

When the iPhone 3G debuted, Apple's original and pioneering home activation process, handled by the user themselves using iTunes on their home computer, was put on hold. The primary reason appeared to be the new phone's much lower price, which required tying the new purchase to an in-store contract activation

"I'm a PC" Ad Images Made on a Mac (Big Surprise)

Computerworld reports that several of the "I'm a PC" ad images that were posted to Microsoft's website were created on a Mac.
Four of the images that Microsoft made available on its PressPass site today display the designation "Adobe Photoshop CS3 Macintosh" when their file properties are examined. The images appear to be frames from the television ads that Microsoft will launch later today.
The images likely originated from the Crispin Porter + Bogusky ad agency that is responsible for the ad campaign.

Apple Recalls iPhone 3g power adapter.

Apple has announced an exchange program for the people who apparently they have a very infrequent habit of prong-snapping, leading to a risk of fire. Check to see if your adapter has a green dot like the one pictured here; if so it is already up-to-date and does not need replacement.

You can get details on the exchange program from Apple's site . Exchanges begin on October 10, both online and in person at Apple retail stores. Be careful out there.

Well that is the word on the street. What we know from anylist and various spectators the update will have the following improvements.

New more powerfull graphics card.

So when we see this list unfold? No one knows for sure, but we think Late September/ Early October.

Pay as you go works with iPhone 3g?

Well yes, over at TUAW the can confirm that the rumors were true: a completely virgin iPhone 3G works out of the box with AT&T Pay As You Go SIMs.

"After unwrapping all the plastic stuff, I popped the 3G SIM holder (it's a lot smaller and more fragile than the sturdy 1st Gen version) and plopped in a fresh PAYG SIM. The SIM had a 30 day/"Unlimited" data (i.e. up to 5GB) feature plan attached to it, which I put on there a few days ago, and otherwise has about 4 dollars and change of credit. (See my previous TUAW discussion about Prepaid Data Packages and the iPhone.)" Quote The Unofficial Apple Weblog.
